How to Fix Blinds: Common Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix Blinds – Broken Window Blind Slats

Windows blinds are essential to any home, providing privacy, light control, and appealing aesthetics. However, like any other household item, window blinds can encounter issues that hinder functionality. Common problems may include a tangled cord, broken slats, or a crooked frame. Here we explore how to fix blinds, from Venetian blinds to vertical blinds. These easy and practical tips will equip you with the knowledge to resolve window blind problems quickly, saving you time and money long-term.

Common Window Blind Problems

1. Tangled Cords

Untangling cords on a window blind can be a frustrating experience. Here are some steps to fix window blind cords on your window blind:

  • Remove the window blind from its mounting brackets and lie it flat on a clean surface.
  • Find the knots or tangles in the cords and gently pull them apart. Be patient and avoid forcing the cords, as this can lead to further tangles.
  • Straighten the cords as much as possible to prevent future tangles.
  • If the cords are still tangled, use a needle or a safety pin to loosen any knots carefully.
  • Once the cords are untangled, reattach the window blind to its mounting brackets and test their operation.

2. Broken Slats

If you have damaged or torn slats, you can easily replace them yourself. Follow these steps:

  • Carefully remove the broken slat from the ladder string by pulling it out of the hook and holding it in place.
  • Use a measuring tape to determine the length and width of the broken slat, then cut a new slat to the same size.
  • Slide the new slat onto the ladder string, ensuring it’s positioned correctly in the hook that holds it in place.
  • Carefully reattach the ladder string to the bottom rail of the blinds.
  • Test the blinds to ensure they operate smoothly, and adjust the slats as needed so they are properly aligned.

3. Loose Brackets

You can solve troublesome loose brackets easily with the following steps:

  • Remove the blinds from the brackets by twisting the knobs or using a screwdriver to loosen them.
  • Next, check the screws that hold the brackets in place. Tighten any loose screws with a screwdriver. If they are damaged, you may need to replace the brackets altogether. If the screws are stripped or missing, replace them with new screws of the same size.
  • Once the screws are tightened or replaced, reattach the brackets to the window frame.
  • Finally, reinsert the blinds back into the brackets and test that they are securely in place.
  • For easier upkeep and prevention, we recommend using a lubricant spray on the brackets to help them grip the blinds more securely. You can also apply a small amount of glue or epoxy to the brackets for reinforcement.

4. Dust Accumulation

How to Fix Blinds - Dusting Blinds

Dust accumulation is a common issue that plagues many furniture items, and unattended window blinds are no exception. Follow these steps:

  • Remove the blinds from the window and place them on a flat surface.
  • Use a soft, clean cloth or a duster to gently wipe down each slat, starting from the top and working your way down. If you have fabric roller blinds such as honeycombs, Romans, or roller blinds, you can use a vacuum cleaner to clean the dust off easily with the dust brush. Ensure the vacuum is on a low suction setting, and hold the bottom of the blind for stability.
  • For tougher dust or grime, use a damp cloth or a cleaning solution recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Dry your blinds completely before rehanging them.
  • To prevent future dust accumulation, dust your blinds regularly using a microfiber duster or cloth. Try using an anti-static spray or dryer sheets to repel dust. Otherwise, you can install a window film or shade to reduce dust entering your home.

5. Discolouration

Blind discolouration can occur due to many circumstances, and you must uncover the root cause of the problem before attempting any fixes. Discolouration may result from colour fading if your blinds are exposed to excessive sunlight. If the discolouration is due to excess moisture, check for mould growth on the blinds.

Sun Exposure:

  • Start by cleaning the blinds with a soft cloth and mild detergent.
  • Use a colour restorer to bring back the original colour. Apply the colour restorer to the affected areas using a clean cloth, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Excessive Moisture:
  • Remove your blinds from the window. If they are fabric-based and machine washable, wash them on a delicate cycle using a gentle detergent. Otherwise, fill a tub with a mild detergent or a solution of equal parts water and vinegar and hand-wash gently.
  • Dry the blinds thoroughly before rehanging them to prevent moisture from remaining and causing further mould growth.

However, if your blinds are severely discoloured and you cannot fix them with cleaning or colour restoration, consider replacing them.

6. Stuck or Difficult-to-Operate Mechanisms

  • First, make sure nothing is blocking the path of the blinds, like furniture or curtains.
  • If the problem is with the mechanism, check for any loose screws or bolts and tighten them as needed.
  • If the mechanism is still not working, try lubricating it with a silicone-based spray lubricant. Apply the lubricant to the moving parts of the mechanism and then operate the blinds a few times to distribute it.
